After your surgery moist gauze compresses were placed on the wound. This is to help stop bleeding and keep saliva away from the open areas. Keep compresses in place 1 to 1 1/2 hours after surgery. After, use them as necessary to control oozing- such as after eating. There may be a slight oozing of blood for 24 hours or so, however, if bleeding becomes extensive do the following...

1. Rinse mouth gently.

2. Clean blood and clots away with clean gauze.

3. Roll up firm pad of moist gauze and place directly over the bleeding site and bite down firmly for 30 minutes. If gauze is not available or does not work well, a slightly moistened tea bad (tea leaves in it) will help stop the bleeding. PRESSURE OVER THE BLEEDING IS ESSENTIAL. You may need to use a combination of tea bags and gauze for sufficient pressure.

4. Lie down with your head elevated at a 45 degree angle.

5. Use ice as directed previously.

6. DO NOT DRINK HOT LIQUIDS or stimulants when there is active bleeding. AVOID SMOKING.

7. If these measures do not succeed, call the office. We have a 24-hour answering service. By calling the office number you will be able to get ahold of the doctor. Follow the answering machine prompts for instructions.
